How to Install KeepNotes as a PWA
Published on May 18, 2025
KeepNotes.online is built as a Progressive Web App (PWA), meaning you can install it just like a native app on your mobile device or desktop computer. Once installed, you get faster loading times, offline access to your notes, and a cleaner user experience without browser tabs and address bars. Best of all, there is no app store involved — installation takes just a few seconds directly from your browser.
What Is a Progressive Web App?
A Progressive Web App is a website that uses modern web technologies to deliver an app-like experience. Unlike traditional websites that only work in a browser tab, a PWA can be installed on your device, run in its own window, work offline, and send notifications — just like a native application downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
PWAs combine the best of both worlds: the accessibility and cross-platform compatibility of the web with the performance and user experience of native apps. For KeepNotes, this means you get instant access to your notes whether you are online, offline, or on any device you own.
The key technologies powering KeepNotes as a PWA include a Service Worker that caches the application for offline use, a Web Manifest that defines how the app appears when installed, and IndexedDB for storing your note data locally on your device.
How to Install on Android
Android offers the smoothest PWA installation experience, particularly through Chrome. Here is how to do it:
- Open Chrome on your Android device and navigate to keepnotes.online.
- Wait for the page to fully load. You may see a banner at the bottom of the screen suggesting you add the app to your home screen. If you see it, tap Install.
- If the banner does not appear, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of Chrome.
- Select "Add to Home screen" or "Install App" from the menu.
- A dialog will appear showing the app name and icon. Tap Install or Add to confirm.
After installation, KeepNotes will appear on your home screen and in your app drawer alongside your other applications. When you open it, the app launches in a standalone window without Chrome's address bar, tabs, or navigation buttons. It looks and feels identical to a native Android app.
Samsung Internet, Firefox, and other Android browsers also support PWA installation with similar steps. Look for the "Install" or "Add to Home Screen" option in the browser's menu.
How to Install on iPhone and iPad
iOS supports PWA installation exclusively through Safari. Other browsers on iOS, such as Chrome or Firefox, use Safari's rendering engine but do not offer the PWA install option. Here are the steps:
- Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and go to keepnotes.online.
- Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen. It looks like a square with an upward-pointing arrow.
- Scroll through the share sheet options until you find "Add to Home Screen". Tap it.
- You will see a preview with the app name "KeepNotes" and its icon. Tap Add in the top-right corner.
Once installed, KeepNotes appears on your home screen with its own icon. Opening it launches a full-screen experience without Safari's interface elements. The app loads quickly from cache and works offline, giving you access to your most recently viewed notes even without internet connectivity.
How to Install on Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Desktop installation is supported in Chromium-based browsers including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera. The process is quick and straightforward:
- Open your preferred Chromium-based browser and visit keepnotes.online.
- Look for the install icon in the address bar. In Chrome, it appears as a small monitor with a download arrow on the right side of the URL bar. In Edge, it may appear as a plus sign or app icon.
- Click the install icon and confirm the installation in the dialog that appears.
- KeepNotes will open in its own dedicated window, separate from your browser.
On Windows, the installed app appears in your Start menu and can be pinned to the taskbar for quick access. On Mac, it appears in the Applications folder and can be added to the Dock. On Linux, it typically appears in your application launcher.
Benefits of Installing KeepNotes as a PWA
Installing KeepNotes as a PWA provides several concrete advantages over using it as a regular website in a browser tab:
- Faster loading: The entire application is cached locally after installation, so it launches almost instantly — often in under one second — regardless of your internet speed.
- Offline access: Your most recently viewed and edited notes are stored locally using IndexedDB. You can read and edit them without any internet connection, and changes sync automatically when you reconnect.
- Dedicated window: The app runs in its own window without browser UI elements like the address bar, tabs, or bookmarks toolbar. This provides more screen space and a more focused writing environment.
- App-like experience: The PWA appears in your task switcher or app switcher alongside native applications. You can switch to it quickly without hunting through browser tabs.
- Minimal storage footprint: Unlike native apps that can consume hundreds of megabytes or even gigabytes, the KeepNotes PWA uses only a few megabytes of storage for the cached application and your local note data.
- Automatic updates: The Service Worker checks for updates in the background. When a new version of KeepNotes is available, it downloads automatically and is applied the next time you launch the app. No manual updating required.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Most PWA installations go smoothly, but here are solutions to common issues:
- Install option not appearing: Make sure you are using a supported browser (Chrome or Edge on desktop, Chrome on Android, Safari on iOS). The page needs to fully load before the install option becomes available.
- Offline mode not working: Visit at least one note while online after installation. The Service Worker needs to cache the app shell and your note data before offline mode can function.
- App looks outdated: Clear the app's cache in your browser settings or reinstall it. The Service Worker should handle updates automatically, but occasionally a manual refresh is needed.
